Patients Coming Off Anti-Obesity Injections Put On Weight Far More Rapidly Than People Using Diet and Exercise

Weight management often requires ongoing approaches.

New research suggests that individuals who stop using blockbuster slimming jabs like Mounjaro or Wegovy can put back on shed pounds much more quickly than those who stop traditional lifestyle programs.

Research printed in a prominent health publication points out that while obese people frequently drop a large proportion of their body weight while using the jabs, the mass returns at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month once they quit.

"People buying such treatments need to be cognizant of the potential of rapid rebound weight gain when the medication concludes," stated researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.

That rate of regain means a return to starting mass within about 18 months.

Analyzing Treatments

The research, which examined dozens of studies involving over 9,000 of patients, contrasted the outcomes of these new drugs with conventional dieting.

Scientists emphasize that individuals who shed pounds through dieting usually experience a slower weight regain—around 100 grams monthly—post-intervention.

The Reason for the Quick Regain

Doctors believe the mechanism of the jabs is key to understanding the accelerated weight return.

The injections copy a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which helps regulate appetite.

"Artificially providing the hormone concentrations far above than normal could lead to the system to generate a reduced amount of its endogenous GLP-1, and may also reduce responsiveness to its effects," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics specialist.

"Stopping of this medication means appetite is unsuppressed, making overeating much more probable."

An Ongoing Condition?

Medical guidelines advise the jabs for people with weight-linked health risks, accompanied by prescribed lifestyle changes.

Many experts contend that, considering the high risk of relapse, the treatment is often life-long.

This perspective is reinforced by drug manufacturers, who note that the results "emphasize the chronic nature of obesity," akin to managing diseases like hypertension.

Patient Accounts

People who have stopped the medication describe a intense resurgence of appetite.

"I experienced something that goes on and you're instantly extremely hungry," recalled an individual.

The struggle is worsened if users have not established sustainable dietary or behavioural modifications during therapy.

Growing Use

Recent estimates indicate that millions of people in the UK have tried these injections in the past year, with interest continuing to grow.

  • Adoption is more common among women compared to males.
  • The middle-aged age group shows the greatest level of interest.
  • Many obtain the medications through private prescriptions rather than the NHS.

In conclusion, experts emphasize that while GLP-1 drugs are potent tools for shedding pounds, they are not a permanent cure and lasting health benefits likely depends on combined behavioural management.
